Linking documents and multimedia files to your web pages, Part 3
In the previous tutorial, you learned how to create a audio popup by clicking on some text. In this tutorial, we will open a pdf document by clicking on a text link. For this example, the document will open in a new web page.
First you must upload your pdf documents to the File Manager. If you don't know how to do this, review this tutorial.
If you are following these tutorials in sequence, you are already familiar with how to create text links and image links. Knowledge of these techniques will make this tutorial easy to follow.
To begin, you'll need to login to the Administrative Console. Directions for this procedure are found in the first tutorial.
- 1. In an earlier video, you learned how to upload video files to the File Manager. Uploading other documents follow the same procedure. For this tutorial, we have uploaded an pdf file named "Product-catalog.pdf".
- 2. After logging in to your Admin Console, click on the "Pages" link.
- 3. Select the page you want to edit.
- 4. We are going to link the "Product-catalog.pdf" document to some text on the page. When a visitor clicks on the text, the file will open in the Adobe Acrobat Reader (if the visitor has the plug-in in their browser). Alternatively, the file will automatically download the the visitor's hard drive. To create this link, select the text, then on the "link" icon in the toolbar.
- 5. When the dialog box opens, you will be in the "General" tab. Click the "browse" icon to locate your document in the File Manager.
- 6. Select your pdf document from the file list. Remember, this file has been already uploaded to the File Manager. If you have uploaded your document and it does not show up in the dialog box, a necessary plug-in may be missing from the HTML editor. Consult your developer for assistance.
- 7. Give your window a title and set the target preference. For this example, we want the pdf file to open in a new window. When you're finished, click "Insert".
- 8. To save and view your results, click "Submit". (You will not see your changes by clicking "Apply".) You will be returned to the "Pages" section. Click the "View" icon to see the live update on your web page.
- 9. Your link is now displayed on your web page. Clicking the link will cause the file to either download or open in a new window (depending on the browser being used and the available plug-ins). If you want to link your file to an image instead of text, follow the steps in Part 1 of this series.
